Consistently voted one of the nation’s favourite classic cars, the Michelotti-styled Triumph Stag was sold between 1970 and 1978 and was a full four-seater sports tourer designed to compete with rivals like the much more expensive Mercedes SL.

Powered by an all-new 3-litre V8 that produced 145bhp, it had a wonderfully burbling exhaust note and even the automatic versions would happily surge to a top speed of 115mph. For the more sporting driver a manual version was also offered with overdrive on the top three ratios which effectively gave it a 7-speed box – still impressive today, let alone in the Seventies!

This 1976 Stag has the desirable manual box and comes with a large history file extending back 30 years or more to show regular upkeep. Most strikingly it was repainted in Citroen Topaz Gold about 15 years ago which really sets it apart from the herd. It also had an engine rebuild in 1993 and old MOTs show that it has only covered around 4,600 miles since.

The vendor acquired the car last May from a gentleman who had owned it for 26 years but had barely used it during that time. He immediately set about a programme of improvements which included a full interior retrim (including new seat foams and door cards), a new hood, reconditioned hood frame, new battery and four new tyres. The previous owner had already treated it to a new walnut dash, new chrome and a stainless steel exhaust.

In July this year the vendor also sent it to Warringtons of Warwick for a thorough going over to get it through the MOT and a full service which cost £1,553 (invoice on file). Driving nicely when we were treated to a short test drive on the occasion of our visit, it has an MOT to July 2019 with no advisories recorded.

Supplied with a large history file and a detailed factory workshop manual, it also comes with a (rather scruffy) hard top which will need to be collected from the Stratford area if desired. A real head-turner if ever we saw one!
