Perhaps it should come as no surprise that there is such a generous offering of MGB GTs in the sale today, given that until the arrival of the MX5, they were the most successful sports car ever produced.

Some 523,000 left the works between 1962 and 1980, a staggering success by any measure, made possible by the combination of svelte lines courtesy of Pininfarina, robust engines, decent gearing thanks to the overdrive fitted to most and, in the case of the GT, a practical hatchback and rear seats for the kids.

These virtues have been further added to since, thanks to the continued easy and cheap supply of parts and upgrades available from a myriad of suppliers, making MGB ownership particularly hassle-free.

This 1974 chrome-bumper model (registered in early ’75) came into the vendor’s hands in October 2015 when it was discovered while on holiday in Suffolk. Duly driven home to Cumbria, it has proved utterly reliable and fun to drive, although the vendor admits that with just 1,600 miles covered over the last three years, it is not getting the use it deserves.

Clearly well looked after, it has been fitted with a Webasto sunroof and spot lights as extras, the car being fitted with the essential overdrive and a modern radio to entertain on long journeys.

Although at the time of writing we had not had sight of the history file, we are advised that there are a good number of invoices and an MOT which expires at the end of August 2019 with no advisories.
