Launched in 1967, the new Elan +2 loffered a more grown up, sophisticated take on the original Elan, offering more comfort in a classic GT format.

Capable of carrying two adults, two children and their luggage, it was only fractionally slower than the previous version, covering 0-60 mph in just under 8 seconds, with a top speed of around 120mph. From 1970 a +2S version was available which raised the power from 118bhp to 126bhp.

Light, powerful and with sensational handling, it proved an immense commercial success for Lotus, slightly fewer than 9,000 Elans of all types being produced by the time production ceased in 1973, of which 3,300 were 2+2 models.

The early history of this 1969 +2S is not known, but by the late 1990s it was in need of some serious attention. A course of restoration commenced, with a new Spyder chassis and bare body re-paint in 1997, the project grinding to a halt in the late 2000s. It was picked up again more recently and completed earlier this year.

As well as the replacement Spyder chassis and suspension, the car received an engine overhaul from Hamlin & Co of Bridgewater, including new valves, guides and camshafts. The carburettors were reconditioned and the engine was set up on the Slark rolling road dynamometer in Bristol.

The car has new brake calipers and master cylinder and the wheels have been refurbished and fitted with rechromed spinners and five Continental tyres. It also has a stainless steel exhaust system.

YWE 600G is stylishly understated in its Cardinal Red and Silver Grey paintwork and the interior is surprisingly well-trimmed and bang on-trend (or should that be ‘groovy’) with quality corduroy cloth.

Definitely more Department S than The Avengers (younger viewers can look that up on Giggle, or whatever it’s called), this Elan comes with a V5C, two past MOTs, some invoices and is due to have a fresh test by the time of sale.
