One of the best-loved British cars of all time, the Escort MkI only seems to get more popular as the years roll by. With its distinctive ‘coke bottle’ hips, ‘dogbone’ front grille and no nonsense engineering, it did exactly what it said on the tin.

However, the tin can sometimes be misleading, as is the case with this car. Although it will fool 90% of the people 90% of the time, it is not actually a Mexico (the estimate alone should give that one away) but a very convincing lookalike. Starting out in life as a humble 1.3 two-door in November 1971, it had four normal owners before being acquired by a rather abnormal one in 2006.

He has completely transformed the car into the Daytona Yellow rally monster you see today. The exact spec is far too detailed to list in full here but highlights include: 2.0 Pinto engine; 205 block; fast road cam; unleaded head; twin 40 Webers (freshly rebuilt); single piece propshaft; Type 9 five-speed box with quickshift and pedal box; Janspeed 4-branch manifold; English axle with rear disc brakes; roll cage; battery in boot; engine kill switch; quick release bonnet and boot; fly-off handbrake; four Cibie spotlights; chrome bullet mirrors etc.

The body has been fully seam welded to AVO spec with double filled inner wings and all metal panels (no GRP in this beast!). It rides on new 13”x7” Superlight alloys shod with new tyres. The interior has colour coded Tyrex rally seats with yellow TRS 5-point harnesses, RS steering wheel and RS 6-pod dash.

In the words of the vendor: “It sounds awesome, goes like s---t off a shovel, sticks like glue to a blanket and draws more attention than £20 notes blowing in the wind.” He clearly likes it and we only hope you do too…
