Much has been done, much needs to be done. Not a political sound-bite, but a brief summation of this Fiat 1500. This right-hand drive Fiat 1500, we should point out. Not many of those around.
The original sales receipt for the car shows that it was supplied new by F Boero & Co of Uganda in 1962 at a cost of 17,300 Ugandan shillings, including ‘special filter and tropical battery’ (which, we should point out, may not still be with the car). It only stayed in Africa for a couple of years, the rather formal correspondence from HM Customs and Excise when it was brought to the UK in 1964 making interesting reading.
We are told that the engine has been reconditioned and it is a runner. The vendor tells us that it is complete (there are certainly plenty of spares with it), and it has had some chroming carried out. It’s a Fiat – so it will need welding – but it’s a Fiat, so it can’t be all that difficult.
As well as the spares, the car comes with an absolute door-step of a file (weighing 13lbs) with 25 old invoices (1967-99), an original factory workshop manual (in English) an Autopress workshop manual, two original handbooks, tax discs, and a factory parts list (English/Italian/Spanish). There is also masses of correspondence and old invoices going right back to when the car was new.
This Fiat will make an interesting and worthwhile restoration project and researching the history of the car will be almost as rewarding. Trip to Uganda, anyone?
