Widely regarded as the finest hot hatch of the ‘80s, the Peugeot 205 GTi has firmly cemented its place in the motoring hall of fame and the very best have already broken well beyond the £35k mark at auction.
However, the best is never enough for some people and there are now a number of GTi’s out there that go even better than the brilliant original – which is where this beauty comes in. The subject of many years of painstaking development, it was originally built by PUG Racing of Durham to combine the finest aspects of a track day weapon while still remaining perfectly road legal. The exact spec is too detailed to list in full here but is amply documented in invoices on file. Highlights include:
Body: 1.6 GTI shell with carbon fibre roof panel; lightweight GRP bonnet and tailgate with pins and locking fasteners; Safety Devices roll cage with door bars; perspex side and rear windows, sliders in front windows and pop out vents; Satchell extended wheelarches.
Engine/Gearbox: Mi16 2.0 alloy block engine; Jenvey throttle Bodies; OMEX ECU by Evotune, Durham; 4-2-1 exhaust manifold and Powerflow custom exhaust; 1.6 GTi Gearbox with Quaife ATB differential; solid engine mounts; catch tank; oil cooler; silicone hoses; twin fan radiator; uprated fuel pump.
Suspension/Steering/Drive: GAZ Gold coilovers, 10 point adjustable; rebuilt 309 GTi rear beam (wider track) with solid mounts; Compbrake rose jointed 309 GTi front wishbones; 3 degrees of camber machined into rear arms; uprated anti-roll bar; upper and lower strut braces; uprated torsion bars; 309 GTi driveshafts; electrically assisted steering column by Easy Steer, adjustable in the cabin; Quaife Quick Track, with all new steering components; track geometry setup.
Brakes/Wheels/Tyres: Lightweight steel-look racing alloy wheels; Toyo 888 tyres; stud conversion; 206 GTi 180 discs and calipers; 406 non-ABS master cylinder; rear 309 GTi discs; performance pads; braided hoses; brake bias control between front seats.
Interior: Cobra Monaco seats; Luke 5-point harness; Satchell gear shift; OMP steering wheel; flocked dashboard; carbon footwells; carbon door cards and webbing door pulls; carbon rear interior quarter panels; carbon rear-view mirror; SPA rev counter with water temp and oil pressure gauges; battery relocation.
Over £5,000 was spent on the car in 2013 including an engine rebuild with Jenvey throttle bodies and a custom inlet manifold which results in a mighty 220bhp. You couldn’t even begin to replicate this spec at the modest guide price suggested so if you have ever fancied a hotted up 205 GTi, bid vigorously now and it could be you who takes it home!
