The logbook says Falcon Saloon, but this 1938 Riley Nine was converted to a Tourer some years ago, probably back in the Sixties when that sort of thing was more common. And - in case you hadn’t noticed – we should point out that it is also a three-door Tourer. Did you spot that?

Our man-who-knows-a-thing-or-two-about-Rileys also pointed out that the car has Riley 12/4 axles front and rear, knock-on wire-wheels (also 12/4), and brakes that may or may not be also ex-12/4. Whatever the brakes provenance they do work and the cables have been replaced recently, which is greatly reassuring.

The engine appears to be a standard Riley Nine item of 1930 vintage, with an all-helical gearbox. It has a single SU carburettor but does come a twin-carb inlet manifold and two Solex carburettors. The conversion is a common upgrade and gives the car a little more zip.

The timber framework of the car is in sound condition and was probably replaced when the car was converted. The bodywork is aluminium although the bulkhead appears to be the original Falcon steel construction. The hood-frame is in very good condition and lacks only the fabric to make it effective against the British climate, although the side-screens are in good order (and will provide protection against horizontal precipitation). The car also has a fold-down luggage rack.

DOX 778 was in the long-term ownership of a VSCC member for many years before spending a short period in storage. It has been recommissioned within the last year and is now ready for its next owner to use and improve.

This Riley is not perfect but is all up together and ready to go. With the estimate quoted it offers a bargain entry into vintage car ownership and will be particularly enticing to the owner who doesn’t mind getting his hands dirty, but doesn’t want a full blown restoration. Riley Nines are sound, well-made cars with surprisingly spritely performance, an enthusiastic following, and impressive spares support - check out Blue Diamond Services who are also located at Bicester Heritage!
