The versatile Volkswagen T2 Transporter was offered in a vast array of different models, from the basic panel van to a fully kitted-out camper to a microbus people mover, the precursor of today’s ubiquitous MPV.
In 1967 it received a major face-lift, replacing the distinctive split windscreen with a full-width bay window and gained a sliding side door and more robust 1,600cc engine. Later models were to use the larger 1.7- and 2.0-litre engines from the 411 and 412 models, necessitating major changes to the engine compartment, although externally the most obvious difference on these was the relocation of the indicators to just under the windscreen.
This 1970 1,600cc Microbus has the desirable low-level indicators and is a RHD eight-seater VeeDub originally from sunny South Africa. Recently imported to the UK, it has been treated to a fresh coat of two-tone white-over-beige paint and a new two-tone interior to match. Mechanically it is said to be in fine fettle following some work to the brakes and the steering, flying through its MOT in April with no advisories recorded.
So much cooler than any modern people carrier, it will be ideal classic transport for anyone with a big family and could no doubt earn a crust on the prom circuit, delivering students to their destination in some style.
