Peugeot already had more than 100 years of history behind them when they introduced the 153 in 1920. Making something of a clean break with their earlier models, the 153 was a more modern design, but one which carried on Peugeot’s history of sound engineering. They were only in production for two years.

Sitting towards the top of their range, the quality was sublime, as can be seen in all manner of details on this mid-period 1921 rolling chassis – check out the adjustable dashboard and steering column for example.

Fitted with a torquey 2,746cc four-cylinder engine, mated to a four speed gearbox driven through a disc clutch, every feature shouts Edwardian quality, from the cantilever springs to the fixed-head side-valve engine layout.

The original buyer seemingly refused to stump up for the optional four-wheel brakes, the car sitting on large beaded-edge wheels which would have had 820x120 tyres on when new (thankfully still readily available).

In total, 1,325 153s were produced at Peugeot’s Audincourt plant, fitted out with either elegant Torpedo coachwork or Coupe-Limousine bodies.

Still remarkably complete, it is missing just a few ancilliaries and of course a body, which means that the style of the finished restoration of entirely down to you. It comes with a spare radiator, front wing-stays and headlight bracket and is undoubtedly a very exciting and worthwhile project.
