Just as the Aston Martin DB5 was immortalised by Sean Connery's James Bond, so the Ford Mustang achieved iconic status in the hands of Steve McQueen's Lt Frank Bullitt, hurtling through the streets of San Francisco in the greatest car chase ever filmed.

To be fair to the car though, it had already taken America by storm, selling over one million units within 18 months of its April 1964 launch. Based around the chassis, suspension, and drivetrain of the Ford Falcon and Fairlane, it had a stiffer frame and wider track to give it the handling to match its sporting looks.

A truly customisable car, it is often said that no two Mustangs are exactly alike as they were available in such a bewildering variety of versions. At least 200kgs lighter than the latest Mercedes C Class, a full 2” narrower and only ½” longer, the Mustang is no bloated land yacht and can comfortably be piloted through narrow English streets, making it one of the most desirable Yanks of all.

This 1966 creamy yellow Mustang convertible came into the UK in 2016 as a project and has been lovingly restored by our enthusiast vendor with a photographic record of the work carried out. The exterior was repainted, the underside was sorted and treated, the chrome replaced front and rear, the carpets and seats were cleaned and refurbished to original spec, the power hood repaired and retained. The straight-six engine and 3-speed auto transmission have been serviced and the radio has been converted to digital.

Two years later and the car presents very well indeed – turning heads and attracting admiring glances wherever it goes. The history file includes a V5C registration document, import and customs paperwork, invoices for work and parts bought and an MOT to May 2019 with only one advisory for slight play in a ball joint.

This classic ‘Stang is ready to go and will have no problems keeping up with modern traffic – hood down, wind in the hair - what's not to like?
