Imagine strolling into Jack Barclay’s Mayfair showroom in 2003 and saying to the salesman: ‘I’ll take the Arnage, but only if you’ll knock £160,000 off the price”. It’s never going to work, is it?

Fast-forward to 2018, and by the wonders of epic depreciation, this is exactly the trick that one of you lucky lot may be able to get away with today. This glorious Arnage R still looks almost showroom fresh, the colossal grunt and the monumental presence remain undimmed, only the price has fallen into the basement.

In fact our vendor’s father paid £37,000 for this car in 2009 when it had 40,400 miles on the clock, a total which has still only risen to 49,400 miles. It has a good service history comprising seven stamps up to 2009 and was serviced again by the vendor in 2017 at 47,700 miles including new spark plugs, fresh oil and filter and a new air filter.

Being a 2003 R model which replaced the Red Label in 2002, it benefits from the later 6.75-litre V8 which was completely revised by VW with over 50% new parts including twin Garrett T3 turbos in place of the previous single T4 turbo and state-of-the-art Bosch Motronic engine management instead of the old Zytec ECU. The result is 400bhp and 616lb/ft of torque which can hurl the car to 60mph in just 6.1 seconds with a top speed of 155mph.

In great condition throughout and said to drive as well as it looks, this Arnage R comes with its original handbooks, the aforementioned service history plus various supporting invoices and an MOT valid until June 2019 with no advisories recorded.

The feel-good factor of these magnificent  cars is off the scale, transforming every journey into an occasion and making you feel like a millionaire every time you slip behind the wheel. It seems highly unlikely that they will get much cheaper any time soon, so if you have ever lusted after one, this is a chance not to be missed!
