Launched in 1967, the Chevrolet Camaro was a direct response to Ford’s all-conquering Mustang. It shared its platform and all major components with the Pontiac Firebird, also introduced in 1967. Four distinct generations of the car were produced before production ended in 2002.

The fourth generation Camaro was produced from 1993 until 2002 and featured the base 3.4 litre 160bhp push-rod V6 and in the Z28, the 5.7 LT1 V8 introduced in the Corvette in 1992. In the Camaro, the engine produced a mighty 275bhp and 325lb/ft, enough to power the car to 60mph in just 5.7 seconds. Most came fitted with the four-speed 4L60E automatic transmission although a six-speed manual was optional. The Z28 cars were identifiable by square section exhaust tips.

This 1995 Z28 Convertible has the 5.7 V8 mated to automatic transmission. Being a ’95 car it also features the improved Mass Air Flow system of fuel/air mixture management. The car presents well and looks even cooler (if that’s your thang) with the optional Indy Pace Car graphics on the side, a $995 extra although these are not original to the car. Featuring full black leather with electric adjustment the car offers comfortable seating for four with that big torquey lump up front giving more than ample acceleration. Having covered just 81,000 miles it is barely run in and begs to be used more.

The car was imported here in September 2015 and has had only two owners since. Documents on file show that it was supplied new by Jerry’s Chevrolet Inc. of Baltimore, Maryland on 14th January 1995 to a Mr Davis of Pettyville, Maryland who ordered the car in silver with graphite leather trim with six-way powered driver’s seat, an optional rear axle ratio of 3.23 ($250 extra) plus a few other useful bits totalling a very reasonable $28,444 (about £21,000 in today’s money) – not bad for a 5.7 litre V8 drop top.

Said to run very well and driven 100 miles to the sale, it looks very smart and has an MOT until November 2019 with no advisories, a V5C, one old MOT and the original purchase invoice. It looks a cheap entry into the world of American muscle at the guide price suggested.
