This is one pampered camper. Originally converted by Devon Campers in 1973 and has spent the last seven years in a centrally-heated garage.

The vendor has improved the van during his seven years ownership, upgrading not only the accommodation but also the motivation.

The interior was overhauled in 2011 with a luxury make-over including a custom-built CAN single-burner hob and sink unit, Propex All Seasons propane heater (both accessible from the comfort of the rock’n’roll bed), double-lined curtains (plus a spare set of summer-weight drapes) and a Ripspeed sound system complete with CD/DVD/Radio and MP3/SD input. LED lighting was also fitted internally.

The engine was treated to a pair of new Weber 34 CIT carburettors, a 123 electronic distributor, Vintage Speed stainless steel exhaust system, alternator conversion, electric fuel pump and new starter motor. The owner has made a point of changing the engine oil and filter annually even though the camper has only covered 1,100 miles since 2011.

Additional improvements include KYB shock absorbers, MCJ wood-rimmed steering wheel, CSP short-shift gear-change, additional leisure battery and mains hook-up. The front seats were also professionally re-trimmed and additional gauges fitted to keep a check on the oil pressure and revs (the owner has an engineering background). The van also has a rather smart pair of KC Daylighter chrome spot-lamps and a cab-over roof rack which was fitted only last year and has yet to be used.

The camper has been a labour of love for its owner, who did intend to get out and about with it but admits that, despite his best intentions, he has camped out with the van on only five occasions. He won’t own up to how much it has all cost and, of course, that’s not the point, is it?

This Volkswagen T2 camper has everything going for it and it is a crying shame that the vendor has not been able to put it to more use. However, it does mean that the fortunate new owner will have the benefit of all the hard work and expense that has gone into it. Lucky devil.
