The legendary Richard Petty had only 400bhp under the bonnet of his Plymouth Fury when he won his first Daytona 500 in 1964. This Fury has 600bhp. Allegedly.

It is thought that this ’64 Plymouth Sport Fury has had a long career as a racing car although little is known of its history prior to its importation here in 1995. If the decals are anything to go by, the car raced at the Lions Drag Strip in Los Angeles and that closed down in 1972.

Whatever the story, the Plymouth is a serious contender. The engine is a 440ci (7.2 litre) V8 Hemi with forged crank, lightened and balanced SCAT con-rods, forged pistons, Howards SS5/SS6 cams, polished and ported heads, single plane intake, and Holley 950 double pumper carburettor. Ignition is handled by an MSD Digital distributor.

The gearbox is a Chrysler 727 TorqueFlite automatic with reverse action pattern manual valve body and B&M shifter. The back axle is a Chrysler 8¾” with limited slip differential and 4.54:1 crown wheel and pinion. The rest of the car is suitably specced and, if it all goes wrong, there are four-point harnesses and a full roll cage. We should also point out that the car is road-registered and there is plenty of room for the weekly shopping….

Our vendor is a seasoned racer who has rebuilt the engine and re-engineered the chassis to turn the Plymouth into a reliable race car and one which would not be out of place at Goodwood and the like. The car is still in the ‘shakedown’ phase but the vendor hopes to fire it up at Brightwells on the viewing day and possibly on sale day too. He will also be delighted to aid the successful bidder in getting to know the car and to assist in any way he can.
