Triumph was riding high in the 1960s: apart from producing sportscars to rival MG in the American market, it was also going head-to-head with Rover in the executive saloon market.

Launched in 1963, the Michelotti-styled Triumph 2000 was a worthy alternative to the new Rover P6, its all-round independent suspension giving it superior ride and handling characteristics. The Triumph used a 1,998cc Vanguard derived six-cylinder engine which developed 90bhp and was more refined than Rover’s four-cylinder unit giving the car a distinct competitive advantage in this area.

For 1969 an updated MkII version was available with revised front and rear panels giving the car a graceful, modern look for the 1970s. New lamps were a key styling feature and the front of the car was virtually identical to the new Stag sports model.

This smart Triumph 2000 MkII has had just two owners from new in April 1975 and has been in the current ownership since 1977 – that’s 41 years! A desirable manual overdrive model, it is showing just over only 94,000 miles on the clock which is said to be correct although there is little documentation to back it up. The MOT history shows only a few hundred miles in the last year and only 5,000 in the last 10 years, the current MOT running to April 2019 with only three minor advisories for deteriorated gaiters to the n/s/f steering rack and ball joint and play in the o/s/f lower ball joint.

This two-owner Triumph looks tempting at the guide price suggested, Classic Car magazine recently highlighting the 2000/2500 range as one of the top ten fastest appreciating classics, partly due to their popularity in the thriving endurance road rally series run by Club Triumph.
