The Vitesse was launched in May 1962 and was effectively a more powerful version of Triumph's four-cylinder Herald range, based on the same backbone chassis. Like the Herald, it was styled by Giovanni Michelotti, who managed to redeploy most of the Herald body panels while giving the newcomer its own distinctive character, courtesy of a 'Chinese eye' four-headlamp front end.

Available as a saloon or a convertible, it was powered by a 70bhp 1,596cc twin-carb version of the straight-six Vanguard engine mated to a four-speed close-ratio gearbox which gave it a top speed of 90mph. Front disc brakes were standard with enlarged drums at the rear, the front suspension was uprated, a larger fuel tank fitted and the interior was more luxurious than the Herald with better seats, a wooden dash and door cappings.

First registered in October 1962, this lovely Vitesse 6 Convertible is believed to be one of the earliest MkI Convertibles remaining, being registered only five months after the model was launched. The low indicated mileage of 53,600 is believed to be correct and we are told that the car has never fallen into a state of disrepair and has only had sympathetic restoration.

All the body panels appear to be original, hence the excellent shut lines, nor are there any signs of previous chassis/underbody repairs. Indeed the only departures from standard are a bigger core radiator with an electric fan and a servo for the brakes, all worthwhile upgrades. A smaller diameter Mountney steering wheel is also included (but not yet fitted) which will make getting in and out of the car much easier for the less sprightly among you!

The vendor is the sixth owner and has owned it for nearly six years, using it regularly in the summer months and reporting that it drives beautifully with an MOT until May 2019 with no advisories recorded. Supplied with various invoices and old MOTs and one of only ten 1962 Vitesse models still registered in the UK, this is a most appealing early Vitesse and you would be hard pressed to find a better, more original example anywhere.
