Affectionately known as ‘Mater’ this cool curiosity is so French we might have to throw in a packet of Gauloises and a beret for the new owner!

Dating from 1981, this left-hand drive coach-built campervan is in very good, well-loved condition, and is well known to clubpeugeotuk.com where it is highly regarded. Powered by a 1.6 petrol engine driving through a four-speed ‘box, it is sufficient to propel Mater along at a leisurely pace and those in the know consider the J9 superior to drive than the usual VW alternatives. It is certainly rarer, offers more space and is arguably more civilised with its generous two-berth accommodation.

The history file contains a host of French paperwork including some hand-written notes from a previous French owner, a few old MOTs and copies of the French certificate d’immatriculation. The original French plates (CX 893 DM) have been kept as a memento of its former life on the Continent.

The van has previously spent time in the UK but has latterly been on the Isle of Man (hence the MMN 933 P plate on the back in the photos) although re-registering it back here shouldn’t be an issue with the requisite V55 form as it was formerly registered on UK plates. The van had to undergo various checks to be registered on the IoM which included fitment of an additional rear fog light and conversion of the speedo to show speed in mph although it still records distance in km and currently shows 118,836km (73,800 miles).

The interior has lots of storage space and all the mod-cons necessary for a weekend away including a two-burner gas stove, 22-gallon fresh water tank with external filler, stainless steel sink, electric water pump powered by a 12v system and leisure battery. There is a fridge with a small freezer that can be run off the gas or electric supply and two sinks, one in the well-appointed bathroom, plus an electric heater powered via a mains socket on the exterior.

Half the price of an equivalent VW and twice as individual, this alternative take on the retro camping/glamping scene is worthy of serious consideration.
