The elegant and sophisticated Tom Karen-designed Scimitar GTE SE5, which came out in 1968, was the car that really put Reliant on the map.

It was replaced by the SE5A in September 1972 which had a revised interior fascia, different rear lights and a slightly more powerful engine. The new model was good for 0-60 in 8.5 seconds and a top speed of 121mph. Later models got wider and heavier, the final iteration, the SE6B using Ford’s latest 2.8-litre Cologne engine. Production of all models came to an end in 1986.

This 1971 SE5 has had just one registered keeper from new and was originally supplied through the Goodwood Motor Company of Emsworth, Hampshire. Fitted with a manual gearbox with overdrive, they maintained it for the first few years, the accompanying handbook and service book showing no fewer than nine stamps to 1973 by which time it had covered some 24,000 miles.

There is a gap in its history, although the file is full of bills and invoices dating back to the late ’90s, showing continued care from its long-term owner.

A stainless tank was fitted in 1997 and in 2012 the heads were removed and overhauled, although the invoice doesn’t say whether the valve seats were converted for unleaded fuel. In 2015 it was fitted with Lumenition electronic ignition and earlier this year, the clutch master and slave cylinder were replaced.

It comes with some new carpets (which are not fitted) and looks to have been well cared-for over the years. The online MOT history lists the mileage in 2006 as 84,580 miles, the odometer now reading just over 3,000 miles. Its current test expires in March 2019 with just a few minor advisories.

This well turned-out SE5 has a long history of care and maintenance and looks excellent value at the suggested guide price.
