This lovely 1988 Jaguar XJ40 3.6 Sovereign spent the first 10 years of its life in Singapore as part of Her Britannic Majesty’s Diplomatic Service who, you may imagine, would have tended to its every need with scant regard to any cost to Her Britannic Majesty’s tax payers.

Being on that small and crowded tropical island, it didn’t have the opportunity to rack up many miles and would also have been spared the salted winter roads that blight Her Britannic Majesty’s other small and crowded (rather less tropical) island. The low indicated mileage of 34,056 is believed to be correct and the overall condition of the car would certainly back this up, although it cannot be guaranteed.

The car returned to the UK in 1998 and has had just two owners since, neither of whom have used it much, the current keeper acquiring it in 2002 and putting it straight into storage. Recently unearthed, it has had a thorough recommissioning and a good service including new tyres, new battery, reconditioned brake servo, new distributor, and a complement of other service items.

Presented for its MOT in August this year, it passed with just one minor advisory, the picky tester noting that all the indicator lenses were ‘slightly discoloured’ [Yes, and your overalls could do with a good wash too, mate’]. We are told that the car was featured in a 1999 edition of Jaguar Enthusiast magazine, but at the time of cataloguing the vendor could not readily locate the article so we cannot confirm this.

XJI 6629 is an increasingly rare example of a low-mileage XJ40 in tip-top condition and still looks almost as smart as it did when new – 30 years ago. With its classic good looks and its private number plate, this Jaguar could pass for a car half its age and we feel sure that even Her Britannic Majesty herself would not be displeased to be seen in it.
