Ford produced almost 5 million Model As from 1927 to 1931 not only in Dearborn, Michigan but also in Yokohama, Japan and Manchester, England so it’s not surprising that there are still a few of them around. This is an American-built 1929 Sports Coupe.

The engine is the original 3.3 litre side-valve but has been improved by the addition of a pair of down-draught SU carburettors, an external spin-on oil filter, Lucas 12-volt dynamo and what is believed to be a 'Police-spec' high compression cylinder head. The car certainly goes well and has been used in Vintage Sports Car Club trials (and still has it buff form), although our vendor has used it mainly as a fun summer car – a role in which it also excels.

As part of its trials preparation the car has a rear fuel tank fitted under the dicky seat and also comes with five 21” wheels (which were the standard issue) and four 19” wheels suitable for trials use. It also has an improved electrical system and wiring harness which, as any Model A man will tell you, is a good thing. It has indicators, too.

The car appears to be sound in wind and limb and goes well. Our woman on the spot says that the dicky seat provides an exciting ride and although the heating is marginal, she confirms that the air-conditioning is most effective - well, it was December...

The fabric hood is in good condition with an opening rear section which enables those under cover to hear the comments of those in the cheaper seats – the driver and front passenger having the luxury and comfort of more modern seating. The driver also has an after-market instrument console to keep them amused.

SV 6773 is in solid all-round condition and is ready for a return to the trials scene but would be equally at home burning up the tarmac at home and abroad. The Model A Ford is an excellent vintage car that is powerful, robust, and easy to drive and has a spares back-up that is enviable.

The car comes with a collection of past invoices, parts catalogues, eight past MOTs, and the aforementioned spare wheels.
