The MG SA was the largest car MG had produced when it first appeared in 1935 and was intended to move the company upmarket.

Stylish, and with a touch of luxury not normally seen in pre-war MGs, the SA was initially powered by a 2,062cc six-cylinder engine (enlarged to 2,322cc from 1937) with a four-speed gearbox with synchromesh on third and top. The SA was good for 85mph and capable of cruising at 70mph. Only 2,738 SA models of all types were made before production came to an end in 1939.

This Dove Grey SA saloon was first registered in May 1939 and has had just four owners from new - the vendor having owned the car since 2005. It was subjected to a chassis-up, bare metal restoration in the 1990s and there is a full photographic record accompanying the car.

The rear axle and differential were rebuilt in 2008, with new half-shafts and hubs supplied by the MG Octagon Car Club. In 2014 the engine was rebuilt by CAS Engineering of Northallerton, with parts supplied by marque specialists SVW of Hull. The work included new pistons, liners, camshaft, etc. There are receipts for this work on file. A year later, the gearbox was also treated to a rebuild. Most recently, a medium-term repair has been made to the water jacket, which had sprung a leak from a previous poorly welded repair.

The car is extremely smart inside and out, with the interior being particularly appealing in matching grey leather upholstery and quality carpet. The dashboard layout has a full complement of working gauges and the engine bay shows the attention to detail and considerate conservation that exemplifies the car as a whole.

This is a rare and lovely sporting saloon with a touch of style and a degree of performance that means it will not be burdensome to drive in the hurly-burly of modern traffic.
