General Motors produced over 130,000 Pontiac 6-28s in 1928, making the car the fifth best-selling car in America. Not bad for a marque that was only three years old and competing head-on with the mighty Model A Ford.

This two-door Sedan is powered by a 3,058cc straight-six engine producing 48bhp – a figure aided, no doubt, by the twin cylinder heads – you did spot that didn’t you? Presumably Pontiac’s engineers really did believe that two heads are better than one.

BF 7970 was manufactured on 1st January 1928 and imported to the UK in 2016 (import paperwork on file). The car has a VSCC buff form and has participated in the club’s Measham Trial. It has been fitted with indicators and – luxury of luxuries – a heater. The rear window blind and clock (incorporated in the rear-view mirror) are standard features.

The car is well-maintained and had a new crown-wheel and pinion fitted in 2016. The wooden-spoked wheels have detachable rims (there is a good, rear-mounted spare) and there are two spare wheels with the car, although they will need some attention before use.

The Pontiac is a well-made saloon with room for five passengers and enough performance to haul them up hill and down dale (where the four-wheel brakes will come in handy). Similar in size to a Model A, it is a practical alternative to the Ford and not quite as common (don’t you mean ‘popular’? Ed).

The car offers value for money vintage motoring and is ideally suited to road rallies and gentle touring, although it might be a shame to trial it.

The car comes with V5C, import documents, some invoices, and a copy of ‘The Toledo Blade’ newspaper (Ohio’s best-selling broadsheet) from September 1928. The car is MOT- and tax-exempt.
