At its launch in 1998, the Bentley Arnage initially used a twin-turbo version of the BMW 4.4-litre V8 which produced 349bhp and 420lb/ft of torque, sufficient to launch the 2.5 tonne beast to 60mph in just 6.2 seconds on its way to a top speed of 160mph.

However, when VW took over the Bentley brand in 1999, the BMW powerplant was replaced (much to the delight of enthusiasts) with the traditional Rolls-Royce 6.75-litre V8 with a single Garrett turbocharger which gave 400bhp and 616lb/ft – making the new Arnage Red Label the fastest and most powerful four-door production car in the world.

Eighteen years on and the car is still no sluggard, but what stand out most is the handsome upright stance and restrained style which make most of todays ‘upper class’ cars look frankly vulgar. And when you consider what those cars cost, this Arnage looks a real bargain.

The car comes with a substantial history of service and repair work carried out by Bentley/Rolls-Royce specialists and still has its factory handbook and service book. The indicated mileage (82,301) would appear to be correct as the MOT records show that in 2006 – when it was only five years old – the car had only covered 44,071 miles and the subsequent 13 MOT certificates are on file to verify the mileage. The current MOT runs to March 2020.

The car looks to be in super condition with very few blemishes – there is slight wear on the driver’s seat, but this will probably respond well to treatment and there are also a set of lambswool overmats.

The new owner of this super-smooth cruiser will experience the kind of luxury normally reserved for bloated plutocrats and captains of industry – and all for the price of a second-hand Ford. This is luxury you can afford……
