The Citroën H-Van, rather like the ubiquitous Ford Transit, has been pressed into service in almost every conceivable walk of life.
The H van's distinctive corrugated body work was inspired by the German Junkers (aircraft) of the 1930's; the ribs giving enormous strength without adding weight and requiring only simple, low-cost press tools.
Originally used for all forms of basic transportation, they soldiered on until 1981, by which time they looked like something from another age – which they were. More recently though, they have found a new raison d’etre as a rather twee way of offering upmarket catering at classier classic events and festivals…not quite what Citroen had in mind when they unveiled it back in 1947.
This lovely 1973 HY was originally converted to carry livestock. It has clearly had both time and money poured into it since being imported in 2018, being comprehensively restored and updated including a full bare metal respray, conversion of the rear which now offers a wide variety of uses thanks to the side-opening hatch, hardwood work tops incorporating a sink, drawers, 240v sockets and glazed windows, interior re-trim and new interior lighting.
The brakes have been overhauled along with fitment of five new tyres, the 1.9-litre engine serviced and considered in fine fettle. The vehicle will be driven over forty miles to the sale and comes with a current MOT running until September 2019 with no advisories and a history file including French documentation, French service invoices, photographs and invoices relating to the recent works carried out.
