The Scimitar, in its GTE form, had been in production for 12 years when Reliant launched a convertible version in 1980. From the B-post back, all the panels were new and extra bracing was added, while the roll hoop from the GTE was retained. In combination with the separate chassis, this additional stiffening meant the GTC did not suffer from the scuttle shake that often plagues monocoque convertibles.

Powered by a 2.8 litre Ford Cologne V6, the GTC was well-received by press and public alike but, with Britain heading into recession, Reliant struggled to find enough buyers at £11,360 (equivalent to £40,000 today) and just 422 were made before Reliant went bust in 1986. A rare sight today, the GTC is the most desirable of all Scimitar models.

Talking of desirability, this 1981 GTC just happens to be the very first production car, bearing the chassis number 000001 to prove it. Those of you with long memories may remember it as Reliant’s show car (there is an accompanying photograph to jog the memories of the rest of you). It has only had two owners – changing hands in 1985, the current owner having kept it ever since and has the bill of sale to prove it.

The recorded mileage – 81,804 – is declared to be genuine and the car has always been garaged and used only in the summer months. It has been waxoiled regularly and has recently had a new gel-coat and respray.

This historically significant Reliant still has its original Cologne 2.8 litre engine, but in 1986 was treated to a Sierra Cosworth five-speed gearbox. The car will be supplied with both its original fitted soft-top and fibreglass hard-top and is one of the few convertibles that looks good in both.

VNV 354W has an MOT to march 2020 with no advisories.
