The +2S was a more sophisticated version of the astounding Lotus Elan that had first appeared in 1962. Capable of carrying two adults, two children (and their luggage) in relative comfort and at some speed the +2S was still a quick car – in ‘big valve’ form the 1,588c engine turned out 130bhp, sufficient to boot the car to 121mph and from 0-60mph in 7.4 seconds. No slouch then and still impressive today.

This 1972 +2S has the Ford-based twin-cam 1,588cc engine with desirable L-block, big valve head, and twin Dell’Orto carburettors but, as you might have noticed, it will need rebuilding. The engine components will be on display at the time of the auction so bring your micrometers with you.

The car does have newly powder-coated wheels fitted with new tyres, calipers that have been overhauled (by Big Red), and a new brake master cylinder. It also has an MX5 electric headlamp conversion kit fitted, supplied by Spyder Cars, and it appears to have a galvanised chassis.

Offered for sale with no reserve, this Elan could be the bargain entry into Elan ownership that you have always been looking for. The engine does need rebuilding but it is not beyond the capabilities of the competent home mechanic (or you could drop in a Ford Zetec engine instead) and while the rest of the car may also need some attention, it should be possible to have it back on the road in time for summer. And it will take your mind off Brexit. Happy days!
