The BMW E21 was the first of the 3-series range, introduced in 1975 to replace the -02 series and remained in production until the E30 replacement arrived in 1983.
Top of the range cars were two-door coupes, with the larger six-cylinder engine as we have here in 323i form. Produced from 1979 until 1982, it was built in comparatively low numbers and boasted strong performance with the dash to sixty taking just 8.7 seconds, aided no doubt by its Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection giving 141bhp from its 2.3 litre M20 engine.
Mated to manual transmission and rear wheel drive, with no real driver aids, the tails were considered somewhat lively on wet roads, gaining a reputation for being 'widow makers', a bit like the 911s of the same era!
This cracking August 1981 model shows just 89,754 miles and is finished in Cyprus Green metallic with beige interior. Boasting its original radio and a sunroof, it was found hidden away after 25 years in storage before being pulled out by our enthusiast vendor. The car has been treated to a thorough going over including replacement discs, pads and callipers along with new exhaust, replacement fuel tank, refurbished fuel injection system, tyres, replacement rear bumper and a jolly good service.
The owners pack and service book show a few old stamps and a selection of invoices for parts and recent works completed. The car will be presented for test prior to the sale and will come with a fresh MOT – watch this space!
A rare find and one that’s sure to find a home with a collector or enthusiast, the E21 323i is rapidly becoming ‘the one to have’ as the market realises how few remain and what a lot of fun they can be.
