The stylists at Porsche did a wonderful job with the 944 – 36 years after its introduction and it still looks sharp.
This 1991 994 S2 has the 3.0 slant-four engine based, as we all know, on the mighty 928 V8 (although they actually share few parts). The engine is not only powerful (208bhp, 0 – 60 in 5.9s and 150mph flat out) but incredibly smooth thanks to the Lanchester-designed, Mitsubishi-perfected system of balance shafts. The S2 is also a joy to drive, with great front/rear balance (better than a 911) and in Cabriolet form is surprisingly quiet with none of the flappy-tent-in-a-gale feeling common to so many soft-tops.
This late model 944 S2 in Grand Prix White is a very tidy car with the bodywork standing up well to the British climate (galvanized, see – the car not the climate) and the electrically-operated blue mohair hood looks similarly unmarked and matches the blue leather interior. The car has covered 116,200 miles according to the speedo which is no problem for an engine that is known to reach 250,000 without trouble, and the service book has a reassuring 17 stamps - one for every 6,800 miles.
The car also has its original owner’s manual, MOT history back to 2009, and had a cam belt change at 94,856 miles. Only last year, £2,140 was spent with Cadley Garage in Marlborough, and the car has also had a recent wheel alignment check. There is a current MOT to June 2019 and the cherished number will go with the car.
