Bullet-proof reliability, bahn-storming performance and timeless good looks – if any car can be called an instant classic, then this is surely it.

Produced from 1971 to 1989, the Mercedes-Benz W107 SL series was a massive hit when new and continues to be highly sought after to this day. Made in the days when Mercedes still deserved its reputation for outstanding build quality, the cars came in a wide range of engine sizes from 2.8-litre sixes to 5-litre V8s.

It may have been the baby of the SL range, but the 280 was still a supremely capable motorcar with an excellent blend of performance and economy from its smooth straight-six engine. Top speed was 125mph with the 0-60 dash being covered in a respectable 9.6 seconds.

Supplied new on 2nd August 1985, this smart 280SL had eight owners before it was purchased by the Vendor in 2016. It has covered 103,903 miles to date although you would be forgiven for thinking it had covered half that... Always properly maintained, it has 21 stamps in the service book up to 2016 when it had covered 103,017 miles.   Used sparingly in recent months it has spent much of its time in underground storage in London.

In September 2015 it had a filters and fluids change (£773) and then in December 2018 it has a further service and gearbox adjustment (£700), both by Rees Brothers of Aldershot. The history folder contains various bills and invoices and 11 old MOTs back to 2003 when it had covered 85,521 miles. It appears that in 2016 it was repainted from its original red to the smart dark blue it wears today. The cream leather seats, with matching dark blue piping set the interior off nicely. The soft top is new and the car comes with its hardtop together with a handy bespoke stand.

The Vendor assures us the car runs beautifully and he is reluctantly selling it due to lack of use (it has covered a mere 906 miles in his ownership). It is sure to give its proud new owner a great deal of pleasure over the coming summer months.
