The Mercedes G-Wagen manages to combine an authentic off-road potential with an upmarket appeal without dipping into the crassness that affects so many so-called ‘sports utility vehicles’.

Never a common sight in this country, they are nevertheless hugely popular elsewhere and have been available with straight-six, V6, V8, and V12 engines, in two-, three-, and five-door format and in two different wheelbases. They are also available in military format and are a popular choice of the US Marines, no less.

This W463 Geländewagen (cross country vehicle) is the 300GD short-wheelbase, straight six diesel variant with five-speed manual gearbox and is a 1992 model. As many of you will know, the G-wagen was substantially revised in 1990 and this one benefits from anti-lock brakes, full-time four-wheel drive, high/low gearbox and three electric locking differentials.

Our vendor has owned the Mercedes since 2015, the previous keeper having owned it for 17 years before that. The car was fitted with five new all-terrain tyres in 2018, has a stainless steel exhaust system and has been regularly waxoiled. There is some service history with the car and 14 past MOTs help support the very low recorded mileage of 64,000 miles. The alloy wheels have all been recently refurbished.

Our vendor bought the car with long-term ownership in mind and has had the car regularly serviced and attended to by a Mercedes specialist. He reports that it has “proved to be absolutely reliable and comfortable to drive”. He is only selling it because he has found a newer model which “proved irresistible”.

This is a rare, short-wheelbase G-Wagen made even more desirable thanks to its condition, low-mileage and right-hand drive layout. It appears to be in excellent all-round condition and looks impressive in its discrete metallic grey paintwork.

The G-Wagen has an MOT to March 2020 with, as you might expect, no advisories and comes with a file of maintenance records.
