There are those who say the W123 range were the last real Mercedes, but there are also those who say ‘What is the plural of Mercedes’? In truth, the W123 was Mercedes Benz’s best-selling car and they shifted over 2.7m in the nine years of production. That's a lot of metal to shift - have you felt the weight of these things?

This 200 is a very smart, well-maintained car with only two keepers – the last having owned it for over 34 years. The car has all the right bits in all the right places: 2-litre petrol engine, four-speed manual gearbox, factory sunroof, original wheel-trims and a very tidy interior.

The vendor bought the car originally as an everyday car but has used it recently for de luxe touring at home and abroad, at which it excelled. The car has covered fewer than 4,000 miles in the last 10 years. The owner reports that the only fault with the car is the inoperative fuel gauge. The car has a current MOT (August 2019, no advisories) and comes with 21 past MOTs, an original sales brochure and many invoices.

With only a little over 150,000 miles on the clock (nothing to a German taxi driver) this 36-year-old Mercedes is in remarkably fine form and represents an inexpensive entry into quality classic motoring. Mercedes’ quality and engineering in the early 1980s is legendary and ownership of such a car should hold no terrors for the home enthusiast. Look after it and will outlive us all.
