Supplied new in September 1990, this Mercedes 190E uses the tough 1.8-litre four-cylinder petrol engine mated to the five-speed manual transmission. It is finished in cream with brown checker trim and the car looks every bit the 80’s hero that it was and still is.

From the era when Mercedes-Benz over-engineered their cars and quality was a by-word, it’s no surprise the car remains in such fine order, especially as its three owners have clearly cherished the car, the last of which acquired it back in September 1996.

H583 GEJ has covered just 76,320 miles from new backed up by 16 old MOTs dating back to 1995 when the car had covered only 32,112 miles. The history file, a very smart Mercedes branded folder also includes the owner’s pack, current V5C, old style V5 and a current MOT to April 2020 showing just three minor advisories for slightly perished tyres and a pitted brake disc – no doubt due to the lack of regular use. The MOTs show little use - less than 1,000 miles per year in recent times, with the car having remained unused over the past three years due to its owner’s ill health and advancing years. It has recently been serviced and fitted with new exhaust components.

The small 190s were a new venture for Mercedes at the time, aimed at the ‘mass market’ audience yet still built with traditional Mercedes-Benz values. It was a tough ask and an even harder act to follow – with many Mercedes enthusiasts asking if indeed they have ever managed!
