Launched in March 1972, the Granada succeeded the Zephyr as Ford's executive car offering, being produced at Ford’s German factory in Cologne and at the British factory in Dagenham.
By 1976, all Granada production had moved to Germany and the following year Ford’s executive car was restyled and upgraded as the MkII with handsome straight-edged styling. Along with it came a wider choice of engines, the Cologne V6 in 2.0, 2.3 and 2.8 forms replacing the older Essex units.
The top-of-the-range 2.8 V6 developed 160bhp and when driving through Ford’s excellent five-speed manual transmission, could launch the car to 60mph in around 9 seconds with a top speed of 120mph. Strong, fast and comfortable, the MkII was always popular with the Police, both real and fictional, howling up the fast lane of the motorway with blue lights flashing and powersliding its way through TV shows like ‘The Sweeney’ and ‘The Professionals’.
Bought new from Moores of Weybridge in August 1985, this impressive 2.8 Ghia X Estate Automatic has had just one local owner from new. Impeccably maintained throughout its life, it has covered 112,523 miles with dozens of invoices to chart all the servicing done to date, the last service being carried out less than 2,000 miles ago in March 2014. There are also 23 old MOTs back to 1994 at 72,375 miles, the last MOT having expired in April 2017 since when the car has been unused and kept in storage.
Supplied with all its original handbooks in the original wallet, this pampered, one-owner car started instantly and ran sweetly as we moved it around for these photos. In excellent condition for its age, this cavernous classic doubtless has years of useful life ahead of it.
