Launching any new Jaguar is always a daunting task because the back catalogue of this famous brand is packed with so many iconic machines that there is a hell of a lot to live up to.

The XK Coupe had a head start because although it was bound to be compared to the E-Type by some, it was actually replacing the XJS which was really showing its age by 1996 and, more important, it had a trump card under its bonnet: Jaguar’s first V8 engine. It also looked great with muscular, fuss-free styling that had plenty of feline grace, as befitting a new addition to the Big Cat clan.

This Ice Blue LHD XK8 was supplied new by British Motors of Monte Carlo in May 1997 and had one local owner until 2007. He had it regularly serviced by the supplying dealers, the service book showing eight stamps up to 42,376 kms in January 2007 which gives an average service interval of just 5,300kms (3,300 miles). The Jaguar then came to the UK where it has had just one owner since.

The car has still only covered 52,500kms (32,600 miles) and has been serviced at least twice since arriving here, the first time by HA Fox of Cheltenham and the second time by an independent garage, although the service book has not been stamped. Notes on file state that it also had a new timing chain and tensioner in November 2012 and that new tyres and a new battery have also been recently fitted.

Always kept garaged in the current 12-year ownership and used sparingly in fine weather only, it is said to be in “rust-free condition throughout”. It comes with all its original handbooks (in French), a V5C, one old MOT and has a private plate which is transferable, PUI 3906. Kept unused and in storage since the last MOT expired in July 2017 with no advisories recorded, it started instantly and ran beautifully as we moved it around for these photos.

At the time of cataloguing the headlining had been removed from the car but it is hoped that this will have been replaced in time for the sale.
