Launched way back in 1975 as a replacement for the E-Type, the Jaguar XJS is one of those rare cars that just got better as it evolved – all too often it is the first model that is the best while the later ones just get lardier and lumpier.

The first major facelift came in 1991 when the Big Cat got larger rear windows, new rear wings, different lights and revised instruments. It also got the superb new 4-litre 24-valve AJ6 engine, a paragon of refinement and reliability that was virtually as quick as the old V12 but with far superior fuel economy (235bhp, 140mph and 26mpg).

Reliability was excellent and these AJ6 engines have been known to clock up huge mileages without drama. Build quality also improved markedly with a galvanized body shell that resisted the dreaded tin worm far more successfully than any previous Jaguar.

This cracking XJS 4.0 Coupe has an extensive history file extending back to new in October 1992. The vendor acquired the car in 2008 with just over 40,000 miles on the clock and has used it only lightly, adding another 20,000 miles in 11 years, mainly in the summer months. Shortly after he bought the car he sent it to marque specialists KWE at Thatcham for a thorough check-over and undersealing which cost £6,400. Since then it has been maintained in top mechanical condition by a local Jaguar specialist.

Supplied with an excellent service history, handbooks, toolkit and due to have a new MOT in time for the sale, it is said to be in very good order throughout with just a few minor blemishes as you would expect on a car of this age. These later 4.0 models are wonderful cars to drive and with only 60,500 miles under its wheels this well-maintained example, from long term ownership, should have plenty of life in it yet.
