With the introduction of the MkII Capri, Ford moved away from the ‘mini Mustang’ look and – with the new-fangled hatchback – added a touch of practicality to the car you always promised yourself.

This 1976 MkII may be familiar to those of you who read, or just look at the pictures in Classic Cars magazine, where it appeared earlier this year. The car is a real stunner, having had a nut and bolt restoration – including engine rebuild - from Phil Blundell at Capri Care around 11 years ago. It has had light use since and has only covered a little over 5,000 miles in the past six years.

The bright orange paintwork is not original (the car was once yellow) but has been skilfully applied and the car is so 1970s it can only be described as funky. In similar ‘70s vein, the interior is a hymn to man-made materials, but is in such good condition that you can only assume the mileage (71,369) is genuine – an assumption supported by the 14 MOTs on file and a sales receipt from 1994.

The rest of the car is commendably clean and it is difficult to know what is restored and what is original – this really is a very lovely example and would hold its own at any classic car show.

The engine is the 1,300cc variant of the legendary Crossflow and if the 54bhp is not the power output you always promised yourself, the economy (30mpg) is some form of compensation. In any event, the mechanicals have a legendary robustness and you should never find spares a problem (should you ever need them). The car has an MOT to April 2020, with no advisories.

This is a remarkably clean car in exemplary condition and one for the collector. The 1300 MkII Capri is one of the rarest of the range and it is believed that there are only 8 or so examples still in existence – could this be the best?
