Commenting on vintage cars and their patina, Oscar Wilde remarked: “Originality is like an exotic fruit; touch it and the bloom is gone.” This 1932 Ford Model B is the perfect example – the car has so much presence in its barn-find freshness that it is the perfect candidate for conservation not restoration.
The 1932 Model B is, to all intents and purposes, a Model A with a beefed-up engine. It was still fitted with the four-cylinder side-valve, not the V8 (that’s the Model 18, introduced in ‘32) but it was a only a stop-gap model in the Ford range and was phased out in 1934.
The car is believed to have been found in a French barn and was imported in 2018. It is UK registered and carries the registration number YXS 732. It is tax-and MOT-exempt. The car appears to be completely original even down to its paintwork and interior trim. The engine has not been started, but is not thought to be seized. In either case, it will need some attention, as will all other functions of the car. The spares supply for early ‘30s Fords is very good and there is little that is not available.
The vendor bought the car with a view to turning it into a hot rod but decided that it would be a shame to compromise its originality and who can argue with that?
