One of the reasons Rover, hitherto known for their beautifully made yet rather conservative saloon cars, launched the utilitarian Land Rover was the shortage of steel.
They needed to keep their production flowing but couldn’t lay their hands on enough material for their regular cars, so they designed the Land Rover which made extensive use of a readily available material called Birmabright, an aluminium and magnesium alloy sheet used extensively in the aircraft industry.
In the era of ‘Export or Die’, much of Land Rover’s production went overseas, which is exactly what happened with this 1955 RHD export model. Part of a specialist collection of early Land Rovers on sale today, it looks a simple enough task to make road legal once more.
Loaded with nice original features, it retains its correct axles, hood sticks, rare and restorable rear lights and what looks like a frost damaged spare block in the rear. The chassis and bulkhead look remarkably sound, making this a simple and rewarding restoration project on offer at No Reserve….just for goodness sake don’t repaint it!!
