Built to order for the Chairman of the Kleenezee Brush Company and one-time Lord Mayor of Bristol, Harry Crook JP, this Daimler Empress Limousine was one of only 33 such cars built. One other notable Empress owner (but not this particular car) was Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, who was known to use hers for a number of years.

Mr Crook and his wife owned the car from new until 1984 when the current owner, and our vendor, bought it. In his ownership the car was used for high days and holidays, including several European tours – all of which have been trouble-free.

During Mr Crook’s ownership the car was attended to by the supplying agent, Coventry and Jeffs of Bristol as well as his own chauffeur. Our vendor is more of a ‘hands on’ man and has carried out the regular maintenance work himself.

Recent maintenance work has included overhaul of the king pins, rebuilding the twin SU carburettors and about 5,000 miles ago, the overhaul of the gearbox. At around the same time a stainless steel exhaust system was fitted, along with a new change-over switch from both petrol tanks.

More recently, the brakes have been re-lined and the system serviced; the flashing indicators have been incorporated into the side lights (to augment the semaphore indicators) and a new battery has been fitted. The carpets were replaced and the car has been given a full service. It now has an MOT to May 2020 with one advisory note referring to a worn swivel pin and/or bush.

This fabulous barouche is only offered for sale due – in the vendor’s own words – “to infirmity and old age – the owner’s not the car’s”. Whoever buys it will have a lot to live up to and Brightwells hopes that they too are careful custodians and continue the trend of long-term ownership.

The car will be sold with the original buff logbook, owner’s handbook, history file, starting handle and jack.
