We have all seen those adverts that say “Never raced or rallied.”, well, this car has been both. And it shows.

It is, as you can see, a 1977 Mk2 Ford Escort, but what is not so obvious, perhaps, is the specification. Take a deep breath and we will jump straight in:

2 litre Pinto engine with big valve head, Kent GTS3 cam, lightened flywheel, twin 45 Webers, oil cooler, three-piece exhaust manifold; Quaife clubman 5-speed gearbox with quickshift; 5-linked thick tubed Atlas axle with 5.1 ZF Diff and standard 16 tooth shafts, Bilstein dampers and coil-over kit. The front suspension has Group 1 Bilstein wedged struts and genuine Ford rubber roller top mounts and track control arms plus World Cup cross-member and strut brace.

The front brakes are Willwood 4-pot calipers with vented discs, with XR3 calipers and solid discs at the rear. Inside the car there is a Brantz trip meter, in-date seats and full harnesses; a bolt-in Safety Devices roll cage, welded-in door cross-bars, and a 2.5 litre plumbed-in fire extinguisher.

The car has just had four recent wheel arches and a spoiler fitted. It also has a fibreglass boot lid, alloy fuel tank, an alloy sump-guard and big gearbox and diff. tunnels. There is a whole lot more to the car of course, and any potential buyer would be well-advised to come and inspect it in person.

The vendor has used the car competitively over the last 18 years and details of some of its race history can be seen on the Internet: www.ewrc-results.com/profile/54693-Aaron-Cunningham/. He also points out that the car would not require much work to make it eligible for historic motorsport. Finally, the number plate is valued in excess of £1,000 and will go with the car to its new owner.

This is a competitive rally car, it is not a show queen and has the scars to prove it. That said, it is a complete running car and would not take much to get it back on track. Considering the work – and the money – that has gone into this car, the estimate is very reasonable: try building one for less.
