By 1971 the Triumph Spitfire was getting a bit long in the tooth after nine years in production so a major revamp was ordered.

The new MkIV was restyled by Michelotti with a cut-off rear end treatment that gave it a family resemblance to the Triumph Stag and Triumph 2000 models that were also the work of the Italian styling house. The front end was cleaned up, and the doors were given recessed handles. The interior was also improved with a proper full-width dashboard which put the instruments ahead of the driver rather than over the centre console.

The engine continued at 1,296cc but received larger big-end bearings and the gearbox gained synchromesh on its bottom gear. By far the most significant change, however, was to the rear suspension which was de-cambered and redesigned to eliminate the tendency of the original swing-axle to unbalance the car at the limit.

First registered in September 1972, this Spitfire MkIV was fully restored about 15 years ago when the odometer was re-set to zero and has covered only 18,500 miles since. We are told that the restoration cost around £12,000 and is documented in many photos on file along with invoices totalling around £7,800 which excludes the work to the chassis/body/paint, the bills for which are missing.

The work included a rebuilt engine with unleaded head; overdrive gearbox and differential refurbished; upgraded fuel system with SU carbs and contactless ignition distributor for more reliable running; stainless steel exhaust with twin rear pipes; new battery; new alternator etc. The interior was fully retrimmed with black leather seats, a walnut veneer dashboard, thick pile carpets, new door cards and fittings and a new hood and hood cover.

Last serviced about 200 miles ago in August 2018, it has an MOT to May 2020 with no advisories recorded. A run of 14 old MOTs back to 2004 chart the gradual accumulation of mileage since the rebuild was completed along with many bills, photos, original handbook, workshop manual, parts books etc. Looking fabulous in French Blue, this is a cracking Spitfire that will turn heads wherever it goes.
