Restyled by Karmann in 1969, the TR6 looked far more modern than the TR roadsters of old and proved a huge hit with the sporting driver of the early 1970s.

Under the new skin, the chassis remained basically the same as its independently-rear-suspended TR5 predecessor but handling was improved courtesy of wider wheels and a front anti-roll bar. The 150bhp 2.5-litre Lucas fuel-injected straight-six power unit was initially unchanged, but was detuned to 125bhp for the US market and also for the UK market from 1973 onwards to meet stricter emissions regulations. Even in detuned spec it could still hit 60mph in just 9.5 seconds with a top speed of 116mph.

This 1971 TR6 is a full-fat CP-series model with 150bhp but it has been modified by the installation of two SU carburettors. This was probably done to cure the issues that could affect the fuel injected cars in period but which have now been overcome by more modern injection systems. Or it may be because a previous owner found SU carburettors are easier to tune. Whatever the case, the carbs certainly improve the fuel economy and if you want more power the SUs could easily be swapped for a triple Weber set up. With 205x60 BF Goodrich tyres all round, it has the grip to take more grunt!

The gearbox has overdrive on the top three ratios which works as it should, and the seats are trimmed in black leather piped in red which match the door cards perfectly. A stainless steel exhaust is also fitted along with a good canvas hood and a vinyl tonneau cover. Old MOTs show that the car has been very little used in recent times, clocking up only 500 miles between 2006 and 2017.

Our vendor acquired the car last year and went right through it, including fitting new front brake calipers and Halogen H4 headlights. He has just completed a 300 mile tour around Wales with the TR Club and reports that it ran faultlessly throughout. Supplied with an original owner’s handbook, it also comes with an MOT to June 2020 with no advisories recorded.
