In the vendor’s words: “I have only really been using it to tootle around on the weekends in summer”. And, since 1988, he has managed to tootle a total of 5,000 miles – that’s approximately 161.29 miles a year; perhaps the tootle should become a standard unit of measurement?

The vendor’s tootling has, in fact, decreased in recent years and the DVLA MOT records show that this 1977 Triumph Stag automatic has done only 1,099 miles since 2006 – that’s half a tootle a year! However, it was used more frequently in its earlier life, as the speedo shows 22,435 miles – and not for the first time.

Still, the Stag has obviously been cared for by the vendor, who tells us he has always kept it well maintained but has never kept any kind of service file for the car. It is not perfect but appears to be a good, honest car in useable condition and has a current MOT to May 2020 (one advisory – “Play in steering rack inner joint(s)”). In fact, the MOT record lists only minor problems with the car over the past 13 years. DVLA records indicate only three previous owners.

Our vendor has decided to sell the car only because he thinks it is a shame for it not to be used and would like to see it go to a new owner with a higher tootling rate. RUK 950R has not been totsed up for sale, but is presented in an honest manner and is ready for immediate use, although it would be prudent to give it a thorough inspection first. The new owner will have the immediate gratification of a smooth-driving classic and the anticipated gratification of a little gentle improvement over time if so desired. What more could you want? A hardtop? Yes, it’s got that, too.
