In production from 1987 until 1995, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class (W124) is widely recognised as the last of the 'hewn-from-granite' Mercedes models before cost-cutting began to erode the marque's formidable reputation for money-no-object engineering.

It was available in saloon, estate, coupe and convertible guises with a bewildering array of petrol and diesel engine options from a humble 2-litre four-cylinder to a snorting 326bhp 5-litre V8. Beautifully balanced and equipped with Mercedes' sure-footed multi-link rear suspension, all felt immensely safe with excellent disc brakes and a unique eccentric-sweep single windscreen wiper which cleared a bigger screen area than any twin blade system.

This 220CE Coupe dates from March 1993 and has the 150bhp 2.2 four-cylinder engine which gave it a 0-60 time of 10.6 seconds with a top speed of 134mph. It has covered 107,000 miles from new with an excellent service history comprising 22 stamps in the book, the last only 2,000 miles ago, plus numerous invoices including one for a new timing chain and top end overhaul in 2017.

Finished in Signal Red with a mushroom hide interior, walnut trim, dual-zone climate control and an electric sunroof, it appears to be in good condition throughout with seat belt butlers that still operate as they should – having to turn one’s head to find the seat belts in lesser cars is such a chore, don’t you think? The suspension has been lowered at some point and the car rides on 17” alloys with recent new tyres.

Supplied with all its original handbooks, the M-B data card and 13 old MOTs, it has a current MOT to October 2019 with no advisories recorded. Pleasingly understated in comparison to the flashy Mercs of today, these beautifully built W124 models just get more appealing with every passing year.
