There are those who look down upon the rubber-bumpered MGB because it’s not a chrome-bumpered car.

The rubber-bumper cars have one thing that the earlier cars do not have and which makes them more appealing to a growing number of people: they are not so low to the ground. The very thing that the ‘purist’ reviles makes them much easier to get in and out of for those classic car enthusiasts ‘of a certain age’.

This 1981 MGB GT should also appeal to that demographic for a number of other reasons: it’s a very smart car with a stylish and understated colour scheme; it has a Webasto-style sunroof (no faffing about with flappy, leaky soft-tops); it is in very good condition throughout and – the deal clincher – it doesn’t cost as much as an equivalent chrome-bumpered car.

NFX 990W has been owned by the vendor since 1987 (with only two previous owners) and he has improved the car considerably in that time. Well, for one thing it was brown and now it looks so much classier in metallic Grey. He has also fitted Minilite-style alloy wheels, a full-length sunroof, rear screen wiper, wooden dashboard and trim and some very smart leather upholstery.

The exact mileage the car has covered is not known (currently showing 62,849 miles) but it has had only light use over the last 13 years and has obviously been well cared-for. It had a replacement cylinder head fitted in 2015, passed its last MOT in 2017 with no advisories and has only covered 419 miles since.

This is a very smart GT which has been cossetted and improved by its long-term owner. The non-standard features are all sensible modifications and overall the car is much the better for them.
