Alfa Romeo have been producing pretty little roadsters since the launch of the Giulietta in 1955.
Their most famous is probably the 'Spider' that was launched at the Geneva Salon in 1966: the Duetto. Beautifully styled by Pininfarina and overflowing with Italian brio, the car was a huge success from the outset but was immortalised by its starring role in The Graduate in 1967, sharing the limelight with Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft.
The original 'boat-tail' design of the Duetto was dropped in the late sixties in favour of a more aerodynamically efficient Kamm tail. At the same time a 132bhp 2-litre version also became available. The model continued in production for over 27 years with only detail changes to the original Pininfarina design before production finally ceased in 1993 after an amazing 30-year run.
This particular car is the last and most refined of all those Spiders, the fuel-injected two-litre S4. Although only ever officially available in LHD, a small number of S4 Spiders were converted to RHD by the importer Bell & Colvill and this car is among them.
Owned by our vendor since 2015, the car has seen only limited use in this time and presents well in its unusual Verde Foglia green with tan leather and suede interior. To add further to this car’s alternative appeal, it is also equipped with automatic transmission.
It looks to have suffered an odometer failure as the present mileage is recorded as just 700 miles on its new digital clock. This looks from its MOT history to have occurred in 2015 when the mileage jumped from just 34,000 miles, to 64,000 inside three months. Not unusual on cars of this era!
Recent works are said to include new tyres, front brake calipers and a set of pads. The current MOT runs to January 2020 with just two advisories recorded for pitted brake discs. The document file also includes the V5C, owner’s manual, service book with seven stamps, ten old MOTs and a selection of invoices.
