When Volkswagen launched its Transporter in March 1950, it probably wasn’t aware of what it had really started – a new religion. What was to VW simply the T2 (the T1 being the Beetle) would become to many a way of life.
The Kombi/Bus/Camper would be hand-painted with flowers, stuck with no-nukes/peace stickers, stuffed with surf boards/guitars/children and driven all over the planet. Myriad versions proliferated – from flatbeds to ambulances – and all have a habit of congregating at Dub Fests across the globe.
This striking T2 Camper was first registered in April 1971 and has been in the current ownership for over 20 years. In 2007/08 it was treated to a full restoration including a bare-metal repaint in the current turquoise (invoices and photos on file). A car trimmer by trade, the vendor kitted it out with all the comforts you need for life on the road including: a full width rock’n’roll bed; 240v mains hook up kit; cooker; TV; foldaway tables; curtains; sun blinds; cloth headlining; bespoke canvas canopy in turquoise etc.
Since the restoration was completed in 2008, FLY 160J has been greatly enjoyed by our vendor, his wife and their greyhound, covering some 18,000 trouble-free miles on many holiday jaunts. Electronic ignition has been fitted along with stainless steel heat exchangers and exhausts, 15” alloy wheels, Empi gearshift and a new top-tinted front windscreen. Still in great shape mechanically, it also looks great but would now benefit from some light TLC to the bodywork, mainly around the rear arches.
Supplied with a V5C, various old MOTs, sundry invoices and photos, it also has an eye-catching (transferable) number plate and looks like a lot of fun at the modest guide price suggested. Go on, you only live once and there’s still a few weeks left of the summer…
