The Daihatsu Taft was launched to go head to head with the Suzuki Jimny. If naming conventions were the measure of success, it won by a country mile – Taft supposedly standing for ‘Tough and Almightly Four wheel Touring vehicle’. You would want to buy one of those wouldn’t you!
It was also called the Rugger, Rocky, Fourtrack, Wildcat and Scat in various markets around the globe, or by its code number F10 or F20 so you can be forgiven for being confused. Whatever it was called, it used the bullet-proof 1,587cc Toyota petrol engine in a rugged frame and proved extremely popular.
This 1979 model was sold through Burgoyne Vehicle Sales in nearby Eardisley for £4,292.24 in April of that year. Originally blue with black trim, it went to a lady owner in Presteigne.
There are five stamps in the service book and it has its original handbook too and as can be seen from a set of photos on file, had a body off restoration in the mid-‘90s.
The vendor gave it another renovation in late 2017 and early 2018 which has included snazzy carpets, headlining and lots of fun interior detail. It has clearly led an active life and has had a hand paint job which looks fine from 30 feet but not much closer. Its MOT expires in January 2020 although technically it is now exempt and there is plenty of life left in the old girl yet.
This must be the only twice-restored Tough and Almighty Four wheel Touring vehicle on the market so you had better snap it up quick. It is extremely appealing and looks loads of fun for its modest estimate.
