The Jaguar XJ6 Series 1 was a handsome beast in its day and a huge success in the sales room and on the open road. Build quality, however, was something else and the majority of early cars are nought but memories these days.

This particular 4.2-litre Series 1 however, is a nice early example with the chrome dials and straight exhaust pipes that were phased out in mid-1969 so although it was not registered until June 1970, we think its a bit older than that.

Unusually, it was specified with a manual gearbox with overdrive which makes it particularly rare. The V5C shows eight previous keepers, although the car lived with its previous husband and wife owners for a full 16 years.

We are advised that there is lots of history on file, although at the time or writing had not had the chance to inspect this – more anon. We have spotted the wood-rim Moto Lita steering wheel and someone has hotted up the performance in the past as it now sports triple carbs. It also sounds lovely we are told.

Having only covered 650 miles since 2006, it desperately needs a proper run. This rare and unusual Jaguar looks mighty tempting at the guide price and we feel sure it has plenty more stories to reveal once the car and paperwork arrive with us. Watch this space...

PS: The history file for the Jaguar has now arrived and it is extensive! A lot of money has been spent on the car over the years, including the fitment of Gaz adjustable suspension.
