Widely regarded as the finest hot hatch of the ‘80s, the Peugeot 205 GTi has firmly cemented its place in the motoring hall of fame and the very best have already broken well beyond the £35k mark at auction.

However, the best is never enough for some people and there are now a number of GTi’s out there that go even better than the brilliant original – which is where this beauty comes in. Starting out in life as a bog standard 1986 205 GTi 1.6 it has been given the full motorsport treatment. The exact spec is too detailed to list in full here but is amply detailed in build sheets on file which can also be viewed on our website.

The engine rebuild alone cost £4k and features forged Mahle pistons and twin 45 DCOE Webers, rolling road tuned to around 155bhp at 7,250rpm. Other features include a big brake upgrade, LSD, fully seam-welded body, 45-litre fuel cell, and lots of Group A and N spec. suspension goodies to keep it planted, including adjustable Bilstein shocks all round . Electric power steering takes the sweat out of the twisty bits, while race seats and harnesses stop you falling out and a fire suppression system keeps the whole lot from going up in flames.

Lightened doors, a GRP bonnet, Plexiglass windows and a largely stripped interior should all add up to a good deal of weight saving. It also comes with two gearboxes, the 'longer' tarmac one is currently fitted. Giving at least 10bhp more than the heavier-engined 1.9 GTI, we are told that it is a blast to drive and has only completed three events from build with MSA papers on file.
